As a wedding photographer, I often have the joy of working at some of Scotland’s luxury wedding venues. When it comes to wedding locations, Scotland has many options available for any couple planning a Scottish wedding. It’s become a destination for couples seeking beautiful settings, historic charm, and a selection of stylish venues that offer the perfect mix of elegance and comfort for their special day.

I love hearing from each couple I work with about what they fell in love with about their venue. As a wedding photographer, I love venues that offer beautiful scenery but also have incredible interior spaces that make spending time indoors more enjoyable, especially if the weather isn’t ideal. It’s those places with character, whether through stunning architecture or thoughtful design, that help set the tone for the day.

So with that in mind, I thought I’d turn to some of the most luxurious wedding venues in Scotland that offer a perfect balance of breathtaking outdoor views and impressive indoor spaces. I’ve photographed weddings at each of these venues, so I offer my views from experience and how they look in photographs. Hopetoun House, Edinburgh

Hopetoun House is located near South Queensferry on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It’s very handy for the airport, major roads, and Edinburgh city centre for guests travelling to your wedding. This stunning building was built around the turn of the 18th Century, for the Hope family and has been in their ownership for three centuries. During the summer months, visitors are allowed access to the house, but during the winter months couples can enjoy exclusive use of the property, with the Tapestry Room, Tiger Room, Ballroom and Stables. You can also take photos in the house itself. Hopetoun House has an exclusive contract with Heritage Portfolio caterers.

A Hopetoun House Wedding I Photographed

I photographed this beautiful wedding at Hopetoun House, which you can see on my blog. I loved working here as a wedding photographer, as the rooms are lovely and light-filled, even on an overcast day. We were able to photograph some of the smaller group photos (immediate families, wedding party) inside the house. The main group photo we took on the staircase outside.

Thainstone House, Aberdeenshire

Based in Inverurie, Thainstone House is an 18th-century mansion set in 44 acres of woodland and parkland. You can choose from a variety of rooms for your wedding plans, including the grand Ballroom, The Green Lady Restaurant, and the intimate Laird’s Room. Alternatively, you can enjoy an outdoor wedding ceremony on the lawn. They have a range of packages and have excellent online reviews. You can have wedding tasting, a wedding planner, or exclusive use of the venue. Packages can be tailored to what you need.

Thainstone House for Wedding Photos

You can view a wedding I photographed at Thainstone House on my blog. It’s a beautiful venue, with a mix of decor throughout that provides you with a range of photo opportunities. So whether you’re after photos with a warm and cosy vibe (especially in the colder months), or light and airy in the summer and spring, you have plenty of options to choose from. I loved exploring and finding a little lane around the back of the House for evening couple portraits, which was perfect during golden hour.

Carberry Tower, East Lothian

This luxury wedding venue is a short distance from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. This makes it convenient if you have guests who will be flying in to Scotland, or arriving by train for your destination Scottish wedding. Carberry Tower dates back to 1480, and was involved in some of the most historic moments in Scotland’s history, including the surrender of Mary Queen of Scots to the nobles in 1567. Despite its historic roots, it has, over the centuries, developed into a comfortable residence, and now mixes history with modern comfort and amenities. This venue offers a beautiful rose garden, a Champagne Terrace, and a Banqueting Pavilion.

Wedding Photography at Carberry Tower

I have photographed a wedding at Carberry Tower, and it rained! Fortunately, Carberry Tower has lots of interesting rooms and spaces that can work very effectively if the weather isn’t quite what you had in mind for your wedding. My favourite room for wedding portraits was the library, as the beautiful window light and the shelves of books create a stunning backdrop filled with atmosphere.

Logie House, Aberdeenshire

If you’re after an elegant and relaxed wedding venue in Scotland, Logie House might be one for you to consider. The main ballroom can host 160 guests, or you can opt to have your wedding inside the house itself. Logie House grounds date back to 1400, and has since undergone many transformations to the stately home it is today. It’s a white-harled building in the Scots Baronial style, set in the Scottish countryside. It has courtyards, gardens and woodland, making it a wonderful wedding destination retreat for any couple planning their day.

I photographed a wedding at Logie House some years ago, and it’s one that I particularly enjoyed working at. The House had rooms for wedding prep that felt opulent and could make anyone feel elegant on the day of their wedding. There are lovely little courtyards for some intimate couple portraits, or you could use the hallway for some dramatic photographs. The Ballroom is an excellent space that feels light, making it ideal for wedding photos.

Errol Park, Perthshire

A beautiful and versatile wedding venue for a luxurious celebration in the heart of Scotland. Errol Park is located in Perthshire, almost midway between Edinburgh and Aberdeen for guests flying to Scotland. The nearby cities of Perth and Dundee also serve well for transport links. This is a beautiful and grand estate, with a grand hall in the main house with the most spectacular staircase. It also offers extensive lawns outside, ideal for guests to enjoy themselves on a beautiful day. In the evening, you may opt to party in the circular Stable block. Outside, the grounds include a walled garden, manicured formal gardens and expansive woodland, making this feel like a true gem in the Scottish countryside.

Wedding Photography at Errol Park

I’ve photographed several weddings at Errol Park, and it’s a gorgeous location for a luxury wedding. The interior of the house is breathtaking and will give those wonderful dramatic photos you’ve likely seen before. The Stables are well lit, so it’s ideal for natural light photos of your wedding guests. The lawns are ideal for lawn games and getting lots of fun candid photos of your guests. The walled gardens meanwhile are perfect for intimate and romantic photographs from your wedding.

Achnagairn Castle, Inverness

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury highland wedding venue in Scotland, then I would recommend Achnagairn Castle. Located a short distance from Inverness, it could also feasibly host almost all your guests overnight. This is a beautiful venue, built in 1800 as a private residence and adapted over the years to blend modern amenities with Scottish heritage. The turrets and stepped gables give it a fairy-tale-like appearance. The grounds include woodland spaces, walled gardens and manicured gardens, which are ideal for beautiful wedding photographs. I love the vaulted ceiling in the ballroom, with the beautiful chandeliers.

Wedding Photography at Achnagairn Castle

I photographed a beautiful wedding here in the middle of winter, and it was incredible. The panelled walls and vaulted ceiling added tonal richness to the winter wedding vibe. Outside, the grounds were still beautiful in the wintertime, although you will want to snuggle up with a warm and cosy wrap or jacket if you plan on taking photos outdoors. I think this is a stunning venue for a winter wedding, although it does require good flash work to keep photos looking clean.

Glenapp Castle, South Ayrshire

Glenapp Castle was built in 1870 in the Scottish Baronial style. It features distinctive turrets, crenellations, and a grand entrance. It’s furnished with period furniture and artwork and beautiful rooms all decorated in keeping with the period. Outside it has beautiful gardens to explore, woodlands, and a Victorian glasshouse. This tranquil setting offers stunning views of the surrounding islands, including Ailsa Craig, Arran, and the Mull of Kintyre. If you want a venue that is suitable for a more intimate celebration, this would be the perfect luxury wedding venue in Scotland.

Wedding Photography at Glenapp Castle

I’ve photographed two elopements at Glenapp Castle, one of which you can see on my blog here. This is a wonderful venue for an intimate wedding or elopement. There are plenty of indoor spaces to explore and use, including the library, which works beautifully for intimate couple portraits. The bedroom suite is so big and luxurious, with an abundance of natural light making it ideal for prep photos prior to your ceremony. I particularly loved photographing both elopements by the pond, both in the autumn and summer, as it offered dappled shade from the strong sunshine, and a gorgeous view of the castle behind.

Drumtochty Castle, Aberdeenshire

Built in 1812, Drumtochty Castle is a neo-Gothic style castellated mansion set in 350 acres of woodland. It’s located northwest of Auchenblae in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This is one of the most lavish and stunning castles you could wish for your wedding, with antique furniture and historic paintings. Beautiful grounds and stunning interiors and architecture with wonderful attention to detail. Drumtochty Castle is ideal for couples seeking a unique Scottish castle wedding experience.

Wedding Photography at Drumtochty Castle

As a wedding photographer, it was all the little touches that made me fall in love with Drumtochty Castle. I felt in particular the Ballroom had very clever use of lighting. Many wedding venues would put generic spotlights or sconce uplighters around the room to help boost the lighting from the wall-mounted candelabras or the chandeliers. Drumtochty has cleverly lined hidden lighting around the neo-gothic windows. This means that this architectural feature doesn’t disappear into the darkness in the evening, helping keep them prominent throughout the wedding. It also means that your photos don’t end up with blown-out bright spots of artificial light, and all your photos in this space will have a beautiful ambience to them. It’s an elegant interior design idea that I think boosts your wedding photos and demonstrates attention to detail that a lot of venues miss when it comes to weddings.
