The Caledonian Waldorf Astoria by Hilton Hotels is based in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town City, and a beautiful venue for a wedding photographer. I was thrilled when Anya and Nigel booked me as their wedding photographer at this prestigious venue in Scotland’s capital city.
Having grown up near Edinburgh, the Caley was always a familiar landmark on trips to Edinburgh. Some years ago, I exhibited at the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria as a wedding photographer in a wedding show. I’ve always had a soft spot for this wonderful building. The Caledonian Hotel is an elegant venue for a luxurious wedding in Edinburgh and I loved working there as a wedding photographer.
Wedding Prep At The Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel
Anya and her bridesmaids started the morning getting ready in the Sir Walter Scott Suite, at the Caledonian Hotel. The bridesmaids had beautiful pale blue silk dresses, overlaid with delicate white embroidered florals. This tied in with the trim of Anya’s stunning veil. Anya also had a shorter dress to change into for the evening reception. She wore beautiful pearl lined satin shoes from L.K. Bennett.
The suite was the perfect setting for this bridal prep. I loved the Sir Walter Scott artifacts, which are exhibited in a glass case within the room. It’s a stylish suite, and perfect for getting ready the morning of your wedding in Edinburgh, with views of Edinburgh Castle, and an abundance of light making it perfect for me as a photographer! It’s also wonderful for wedding make up artists and hair stylists, as it has so much space and light to work with. Working as a wedding photographer at the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Edinburgh was an absolute dream in this suite!
Wedding Ceremony At St. Mary’s Cathdral, Edinburgh
Anya and Nigel’s wedding ceremony was conducted by Fr. Robert at St. Mary’s Cathedral, at Palmerston Place in Edinburgh. This is a beautiful cathedral for a wedding in Scotland. Located near St James’ Quarter, and The Playhouse Theatre, the staircase outside is brilliant for organising group photos or confetti. St. Mary’s is a short drive from Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Edinburgh. Both locations feel like they bookend Princes Street in Edinburgh.
Wedding Photos At Carlton Hill, Edinburgh
Post-ceremony, we headed to Carlton Hill for wedding photographs of Anya and Nigel. Although busy, there are ways to crop out the tourists and visitors who come here to take advantage of the panoramic scenes! I loved finding opportunities to fit Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat and the Salisbury Crags into the background of the wedding photographs.
Edinburgh Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel Wedding Reception Photography
After the couple portraits, we headed to The Caledonian Hotel for photos of the wedding reception. The couple had booked the Castle Suite and Lounge for their wedding. This impressive suite can seat 180 guests at your wedding. I love the pale blue walls and beautiful murals that line the room. The mirrors and windows let the light bounce around the room. This is a beautiful room for your wedding at the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh – the light is perfect for photos. Anya and Nigel had small bouquets of flowers, with multicoloured candles on each table.

Evening Wedding Photographs at Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Edinburgh
There’s a wonderful lull in the evenings at most weddings, somewhere between the end of the meal and the beginning of the dancing. It’s the perfect and most magical point to slip out and get some evening couple portraits. I love taking couples out during this moment. What makes it special is that you get to reconnect while I snap some candid and relaxed wedding photos. What I love especially around the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Edinburgh is that there are some lovely New Town streets to explore nearby. Plus, there are the beautifully preserved victorian arches where the railway used to be.
