Destination wedding photos in Scotland have a certain magic to them, and this Dunnottar Castle celebration was the perfect mix of dramatic cliffs, sunshine, and a bit of 35mm film charm.
Fer and Ester both originally come from Spain, but have chosen to make Scotland their home. They wanted to marry somewhere special and bring all their family and friends from Spain to Scotland to celebrate with them. Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven is an iconic Scottish wedding destination. It has dramatic scenery and is loaded with history and heritage.
The sun shone bright on this day, one of the hottest you can imagine! The North East Coast of Scotland sits along the North Sea, often bringing drier weather with cooler winds and temperatures. However, on this particular day, the temperature was definitely high.
I was really excited to work with Ester and Fer for their wedding. We had chatted previously, and I loved their enthusiasm when we spoke.
I asked Fer and Ester about the feeling of their destination wedding in Scotland and what they wanted from the photos. They replied that they were going for a relaxed and organic wedding vibe. They also wanted to have pictures that capture the beauty of the in-between moments.

Wedding Ceremony at Dunnottar Castle
The wedding ceremony was held at the cliffs overlooking Dunnottar Castle. This gave us an iconic backdrop for their Scottish destination wedding photos. Gerrie Douglas Scott, a humanist celebrant, conducted the ceremony. Gerrie spoke fluent Spanish throughout the ceremony, meaning all the guests understood.
As a destination wedding in Scotland, this was a lot of fun to photograph. I love seeing more international couples choosing Scotland as their destination for their wedding and commissioning me as their photographer.
I asked them what was most important to them with their venue for their photography, and they replied “It is important to us to have pictures with the landscape in the background.”

Fer and Ester allowed me some time to take some photos of them post ceremony too. We went for a wander around the grounds of Dunnottar Castle. I have one piece of advice though: if you plan to do this, make sure you have the right footwear! There are a lot of steps to climb, so comfortable shoes are a must.
We went along the cliffs, as well as down to the beach. As a Scottish wedding destination photographer, Dunnottar Castle is just a dream for gorgeous backdrops. Fer and Ester explained why they chose Dunnottar Castle for their destination wedding photos in Scotland, “To celebrate our love with our people in a beautiful historical landscape.”

35mm Film Destination Wedding Photography In Scotland
One of the things I loved doing for Fer and Ester was to photograph parts of their wedding day in Scotland with my film camera. I photographed using a mix of Ilford black and white film and gorgeous Kodak Portra colour film.
I think the black and white worked well with the strong contrast, particularly inside the ruins of Dunnottar Castle. The backlight on Ester’s veil was beautiful, and I love her hair as it’s caught in the light breeze.
